Writing:
The Chatels are one of several races of mushroom Merydians. (A Merydian is any race capable of speaking Merydian, this world’s equivalent of common or English). They are short stumpy humanoids who closely resemble dwarves in stature and shape, but lack facial details, having mostly flat faces with only folds to approximate something similar to a face and three holes to represent their eyes and mouth.
These exist purely for socialising with other races as they are capable of seeing and eating from any other part of their body. Every Chatel also has a large mushroom head growing above their face, though the type of mushroom depends on the specific tribe of the Chatel.
One of these Chatels lived under the great desert with their tribe, coexisting with monsters within a large abandoned dwarven city that had long since turned into a natural dungeon and monster breeding ground. This mostly peaceful coexistence came to an abrupt stop as a new monster stumbled into the city from somewhere deeper ground.
A shadowy wraith in the shape of a giant wolf, this monster had magical abilities that let it melt into the shadows and was incredibly strong, quickly taking over the local ecosystem as it hunted with reckless abandon. The Chatel tribe that lived in this city was soon a target of the Wraith’s greed and it attacked with overwhelming strength… They stood no chance.
The entire Chatel tribe was nearly wiped out in a few days, despite their desperate struggle. They were reduced from a tribe of nearly a hundred to a mere dozen survivors, and if the Wraith were to have its way, they too would soon meet their brethren in the great entropy.
As the Wraith attacked them again, they were hopeless and cornered, but they were visited upon by an unlikely saviour at the last minute: A young elven man with blazing red hair, wielding the flames of a great fire spirit. This young elf, barely thirty years old, fought off the Wraith and saved them, but couldn’t kill it. With the city now too dangerous for the Chatels, the young elf helped them find an opportunity to escape through a narrow chasm in the walls of the far end that he sadly couldn’t squeeze through.
Once safe, the Chatel spent the next seventy years looking for the young elf to thank him for what he had done for his family. He had long since learnt the common language after several years of interacting with other Merydians, even taking up the job of being a trader after inheriting it from a mentor he met over the years. He had since given himself a name the Meridians can pronounce: Rotan.
Finally, seventy years later, in the trading city of the world,
He finally found the young elf again.
Added details:
-Mentor was an old human lady glassmaker.
-Charity work and old lady jokes. -Natural mana absorption, cannot use magic

If you're reading this and noticed something... yes, I didn't describe him as a character at all. As one of the earliest characters, I gave myself a strict 20 minute timelimit to write him, and wasted that time on writing more of his backstory instead of anything about him as a person...
If it makes it any better, this is the character who made me decide to spend more time
